Children’s Show 2006

February 15 – 25, 2006

The parent-funded Visual Arts Program at Dixie Canyon is taught by Professional Arts Expert, Kathy Barbro. A graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Kathy strives to bring art lessons that are both fun (lots of variety of media), educational (based on the California Visual Arts Standards), and historical (connected to art history whenever possible).

In the photo above, Hannah is proudly showing her ring drawing, which was a lesson in how overlapping shapes can create depth in a picture. This is an example of one of the CA Arts Standards, which were developed to give students a foundation of art concepts that can expand from year to year. For example, 1st graders may learn about mixing basic colors, 2nd graders – identify warm and cool, 3rd – identify secondary colors, and so on. Below is a Kinder cow painting – the first experience in painting for some – and then a 5th grade chalk pastel flower inspired by Georgia O'Keefe.

Dixie's one-hour weekly art program provides important lessons in creative discovery. The students are extremely proud of the work they have produced this year, and are thrilled to see it on display in a professional gallery, where every class will be represented. Thank you VIVA, for this priceless opportunity.

Kathy Barbro also teaches Children’s Art Classes every Saturday morning for kids age 5 and up at VIVA .
